The lessons on the DVD are given by Dr Françoise Barbira Freedman, a medical anthropologist at the University of Cambridge and a highly acclaimed yoga teacher.
Dr Freedman lectures in midwifery and women's health for the NHS and is the founder of Birthlight, a UK based charitable trust that is dedicated to promoting a sensitive approach to pregnancy, birth and babies. The Birthlight Trust is an educational charity that promotes an integrated, holistic approach to pregnancy, birth and babyhood. Its main objective is to enhance well being and enjoyment for parents and their babies before and after birth.
Dr Freedman has lived and worked around the world with many diverse cultures. She has drawn on this wide-ranging experience and combined it with traditional yoga techniques to create Baby Yoga.
Dr Freedman's pioneering interest in pregnancy, childbirth and beyond, stems from her early anthropological studies in the Amazon.
Her reputation as a yoga teacher is based on her creative development using the flow of breath in relaxed stretches and adapting classic yoga postures for women's needs in pregnancy, after birth and for reproductive health generally.
The lessons given by Dr Françoise Barbira Freedman guide parents and their babies through the exercises, teaching the movements and providing advice.
The DVD is split into five easy to follow sessions. The first session is for babies from birth onwards. Subsequent segments develop and build on this foundation with the final session showing how the techniques can be applied to an eighteen-month-old child.
Each session is completed with a set of relaxation exercises that rejuvenate you while often sending your baby gently off to sleep. Once mastered, the exercises can be done at any time and at any location and can be very useful for calming down a fractious baby.
Baby Yoga has been developed by yoga instructor Dr Françoise Barbira Freedman a medical anthropologist at Cambridge University, founder of Birthlight, and mother of four. Baby Yoga has been approved by paediatricians, doctors and midwives but it is essential that you follow the instructions and safety warnings provided on the video.
Toddler Yoga When your baby is more mobile and keen to put weight onto the legs, Baby Yoga can be taken one stage further....
Toddler Yoga has all the benefits associated with Baby Yoga but the exercises become a little more adventurous. Toddler Yoga can involve the whole family, it can be done 'one to one' or in a group. It encourages pre-verbal communication, enhances physical confidence and crucially it reminds adult and child to relax together. This not only enriches the parent-child relationship but also helps stimulate the mental and emotional faculties of the child.
Toddlers or parents do not need to have had previous yoga experience to enjoy this DVD. These exercises are presented by Dr Françoise Barbira Freedman and her fellow yoga tutors Sally Lomas and Uma Dinsmore-Tuli. In addition there is a section specifically designed for the nursery school environment.
